Ways To Promote Youth Sports Safety

In this article, I like to bring the attention to safety for youths on the playing grounds. Here is a summary of collections of articles I have found over the past. Many youths who are fourteen and under, face the risk of injury. Mainly from coaches, parent volunteers, those are no adequately trained in sport safety. For an example, a child who becomes thirsty, nauseated, and mentally confused could be a sign of dehydration. Would these coaches or parent volunteers recognize these problems in the young athletes, on the playing fields? Would they know symptom resulted from an injury that just accrued? If so, coaches, or parent volunteers know what to do if it happens? The NCSS and NYSSF keep the recent guidelines and resources on youth safety. All who participate in youth sports come accustomed to safety issues and adapt them to their sports curriculum? Create a list of all the organizations that offer sports programs and all playgrounds and sport playing fields in your community. All must be checked for hazards. Such hazards include rocks, glass, potholes, and debris. For soccer events, check all removable soccer goals to assure they are properly anchored to the ground. Therefore, they do not accidentally tip over on our young athletes. By being proactive and more knowledgeable, your coaches, staff, and volunteers will be more equipped to avoid preventable injuries, which will reduce these risks. Your group's commitment to sports safety education will allow you to be equipped in avoiding preventable injuries, which will, also reduce any risks. Knowing these simple safety rules will be another way to differentiate your program. In addition, your group's commitment to sports safety education for its coaches will be another way to differentiate your program.A community can hold sports safety meetings with the PTA, schools, health clubs, recreation centers, and youth sport groups about youth sports safety. Also, invite local professional organizations and community health organizations to run awareness articles in there local newspapers about sport safety. Participation of a leadership role must be encouraged for coaches and volunteers to educate themselves of the safety regulations.

Things to be prepared to consider adopting in your Sports program

We cannot ask our coaches to volunteer their time and then require them to purchase this course.

  • Consider incorporating Sport Safety Education into the overall costs of your organization. Like uniforms and equipment, sports safety education should be a requirement before play can begin.

How can our organization cover the cost of the course?

  • Secure a local sponsor

·         Identify a parent wanting to become involved with the team, but who cannot coach

·         Ask them to head up this effort & NCSS can provide materials to secure a sponsor

  • Include cost as part of athlete registration fee

·         Have the athlete's registration fee cover everything plus sports safety education for your coaches and take credit for your commitment to sports safety education!

·         Average increase to registration is $3 per player per coach educated.

·         How many parents will object to a small increase for something that has a direct impact on the safety of their kids?

Our coaches are volunteers so we cannot require them to become educated.

·        Youth safety is something that cannot be compromised; it is up to the leaders in youth sports to make the safety of our athletes a top priority. The health and welfare of your athletes and children depends on it.

Our coaches are busy so we cannot expect them to complete this course.

·        Although not all coaches are the same, the vast majority do it for the love of the game and or for the love of their child participating. Coaches will respect the standards that you as an organization set for them especially when those standards benefit them as a coach. Do not underestimate your coaches!
